Fury vs Joshua in doubt again

Days after Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua were announced for December 11 in Cardiff, Fury cast doubt on the fight. He claims Joshua and his promoter Eddie Hearn want to withdraw. Joshua’s side has not confirmed any cancellation, and Matchroom still lists the bout as an upcoming event.

Organisers announced the all-British heavyweight contest at Principality Stadium on September 24. Netflix said it would stream the event globally. It would be the former world champions’ first professional meeting after years of failed attempts to bring them together.

Fury’s allegation is not a cancellation

Two days after the announcement, Fury accused Joshua and Hearn in a video of trying to derail the fight. In a subsequent interview he initially put its chances at just one per cent. Later in that same conversation, however, he said the signed contracts gave him reason to think it would happen. His allegation does not establish that Joshua has pulled out.

A dispute over Dana White’s role

The promotion of the event is a visible point of contention. The official announcement names The Ring and Dana White as promotional partners. Hearn, who represents Joshua, disputes White’s involvement; White insists he has a role. Their public positions conflict, but they do not prove that Joshua has withdrawn.

The date remains on the schedule

Matchroom continues to list Fury vs Joshua for December 11. The immediate next step is less certain: Hearn said on Sunday that the planned September 30 press conference was not yet confirmed.
