Agit Kabayel has the belt. Not as a rumor, not as a future possibility, but officially: the WBC recognizes the Bochum heavyweight as world champion from June 27, 2026. For German boxing, that is a massive headline. The catch is just as obvious: Kabayel did not beat Oleksandr Usyk for it.

That is why this title feels different. Kabayel did not become champion through one defining ring night, but through a governing-body decision. Usyk vacated the WBC, WBA and IBF belts to control the final chapter of his career without mandatory-defense pressure. The WBC then elevated its interim champion to full champion.

Historic, but uncomfortable

None of that erases Kabayel’s work. His route was not a gift: he stopped Zhilei Zhang, handled Damian Knyba in Oberhausen, stayed unbeaten and forced himself into mandatory position. He boxed his way into this spot. Still, one question will follow him until he answers it with punches: is he the world’s best heavyweight, or the first beneficiary of Usyk’s exit?

For Germany, the moment is still huge. A German WBC heavyweight champion is not a routine title change; it is a historic boxing marker. Kabayel is not a loud showman. He is a pressure fighter who breaks opponents with pace, body work and calm persistence. In that sense, the belt fits his career: little flash, plenty of substance, one major proof still missing.

The next fight matters twice
