Magomedov Faces Rising UFC Middleweight Rowston

Abus Magomedov's next UFC assignment is set. The middleweight will face Cam Rowston at UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi on October 24. On paper, the division's current number 14 is defending his ranking against an unranked opponent. In sporting terms, the matchup is far more dangerous than those labels suggest.

The win in Baku corrected his course

Magomedov enters the fight with a record of 29 wins, seven defeats and one draw. He most recently submitted Michal Oleksiejczuk with a first-round guillotine in Baku in June. The result was a direct response to his submission loss against Joe Pyfer in October 2025. Magomedov is now back inside the UFC middleweight Top 15.

His strengths are well established. Magomedov can work at range with long punches and kicks, but he also owns dangerous submission grappling. Fourteen of his victories have come by knockout and eight by submission, with 16 first-round finishes. That finishing ability is an advantage, but against Rowston it cannot become an excuse for a rushed opening.

Rowston is not a tune-up opponent

Cam Rowston holds a 15-3 record and has won seven consecutive fights. Since making his UFC debut, he has stopped Andre Petroski and Cody Brundage before defeating Robert Bryczek by unanimous decision in May. All three judges scored that bout 30-27 for the Australian.

The 31-year-old does not rely on a single route to victory. The UFC lists six knockouts and seven submissions on his record. Against Bryczek, he combined measured striking with fence work, takedowns and pressure from top position. It is exactly the type of multi-phase challenge Magomedov must solve with discipline for as long as the fight lasts.

Both fighters are listed by the UFC with a 78-inch reach. Magomedov therefore cannot expect to control Rowston from a safe distance alone. He needs to command the centre, build his attacks cleanly and prevent the Australian from linking punches, clinch work and grappling without resistance.

A Top 15 place is at stake

UFC 333 is not a shortcut to a title fight for Magomedov. A convincing win over an opponent in strong form would, however, consolidate his ranking and strengthen his case for another ranked middleweight next. A defeat could instead carry Rowston into the rankings and cost Magomedov the place he has just regained.

That is what makes the booking compelling. This is not an established name being handed a simple tune-up. Magomedov must show that his experience and versatility can hold up across the full contest. Rowston gets the opportunity to prove that his winning run already belongs in the Top 15.
