Makhachev Breaks Silva's Record

Islam Makhachev made UFC history at UFC 330. The welterweight champion defeated Ian Machado Garry by unanimous decision in the Philadelphia main event and made the first defense of his title. The judges scored it 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47.

The win also changes the historical benchmark. According to the UFC, Makhachev now has 17 consecutive wins inside the Octagon, moving him alone past Anderson Silva's previous mark of 16.

The knockdown shapes the fight

Makhachev set the terms early. In round one, he used grappling phases to take away Garry's rhythm and space. In round two, he landed a right hand and a left high kick out of the clinch that briefly put Garry on the canvas.

That was the clearest damaging moment of the fight. It turned Makhachev's control into a firm lead, even though Garry did not collapse. The Irish challenger survived the most dangerous spell and began to find his range from round three.

Garry makes him work

Garry lost clearly enough that the winner was not in doubt. Still, this was not a defeat that removes him from the top tier. He was not run over, stayed in the fight for five rounds and forced Makhachev to remain disciplined deep into the championship rounds.

The UFC recap notes that Garry out-landed Makhachev in round three, when the champion had to work harder for his positions. Sherdog's round notes also point to a more competitive second half. It did not change the result, but it gave the title fight real sporting weight.

A record with substance

Makhachev's night was historic without being flawless. That is what made it revealing. He did not win because Garry fell apart early; he won because, after a more difficult middle stretch, he pulled the fight back toward the terms he wanted.

The record is therefore more than a statistic. Makhachev earned it against a long welterweight who defended well, stayed patient and did not give away easy positions. For the division, that is the message: the champion does not need to dominate every round to gather enough control and clear moments over five.

Dern also keeps her belt

The other title fight also stayed with the champion. Mackenzie Dern defended the strawweight belt against Gillian Robertson by decision, with the same 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47 scoreline. UFC 330 therefore ended with two title defenses that looked closer on the cards than they felt in the broader rhythm of the fights.

Before that, the main card carried far more explosiveness. Esteban Ribovics stopped Edson Barboza, Dustin Stoltzfus submitted Mansur Abdul-Malik, and Jalin Turner needed only 39 seconds against Kauê Fernandes according to the UFC. Turner, Stoltzfus and Charles Johnson later received Performance bonuses.

The bar gets higher

For Garry, the takeaway is that he can remain competitive over the full distance against one of the UFC's best fighters. For Makhachev, there is much more: a first welterweight title defense, the longest winning streak in UFC history and another sign that his style holds up against bigger opponents.

After UFC 330, the welterweight division is no longer asking a broad question about whether Makhachev belongs at the weight. The question is sharper now: who can do more than make him work, and actually break his order across five rounds?
