Klötzer Reaches Euro Semis

Maxi Klötzer has reached the semi-finals at the Elite European Championships in Sofia. The German Boxing Federation's 51-kilogram boxer beat Hungary's Laura Horvath on points in Tuesday's quarter-final. She is the first German athlete at this tournament to reach the last four.

For the German team, it is the most important women's result of the competition so far. Kevin Lebowski later followed her into the semi-finals at 90 kilograms with a 3-0 points win over England's Isaac Okoh. Leonie Müller, meanwhile, lost her 70-kilogram quarter-final on points to Turkey's Olympic champion Busenaz Sürmeneli, while Helena Engels was beaten by Turkey's Busra Isildar at 75 kilograms.

Klötzer makes her second chance count

Klötzer advanced to the quarter-finals on Saturday through a walkover against Martina Vassallo. Her first contested bout in Sofia therefore became an immediate pressure test: victory meant a semi-final place, defeat meant the end of the tournament. Against Horvath, she handled that assignment over the full distance.

The win matters beyond the line in the results sheet. Germany entered 13 athletes in Sofia, but before Tuesday only Valerij Walter had reached a quarter-final, where he exited on Monday. Klötzer has now moved the team back into the decisive stage of the tournament.

Müller stopped by Sürmeneli

Müller's quarter-final was one of the toughest German assignments of the day from the start. Sürmeneli has belonged to the top tier at welterweight for years and brought far greater title-fight experience. Müller had boxed her way into this round on Sunday with a points win over Slovakia's Jessica Triebelova.

The defeat does not erase Müller's tournament. She won her opening bout and then met an opponent operating in a different experience bracket. For Germany's daily picture, though, it is a clear blow: a second women's medal in that division is no longer possible.

Lebowski follows, Engels exits

Lebowski made the most of his quarter-final at 90 kilograms, beating Okoh 3-0 on points. He is also through to the last four, giving the German team a second medal chance. Engels' tournament, by contrast, ended in the quarter-finals: the 75-kilogram boxer lost 5-0 on points to Isildar.

The Elite European Championships continue through September 25. For Germany, Tuesday still changes the picture in Sofia: a difficult team week now has two semi-final chances. Klötzer next faces Spain's Laura Fuertes Fernández, while Lebowski meets Turkey's Emrah Yasar.
