Max Coga: Was That His Final Fight?
Max Coga left one glove in the cage after beating Christian Jungwirth. With knee surgery and another lengthy layoff ahead, his fighting future remains uncertain.
Max Coga defeated Christian Jungwirth by decision after three hard-fought rounds at OKTAGON 94. But following his September 26 comeback in Frankfurt, the win was not the only talking point: Coga left one glove in the cage. At the post-fight press conference, the 37-year-old explained that knee surgery and another lengthy layoff lie ahead. He left open whether he will fight again.
One glove, not a confirmed retirement
Asked about another stadium appearance, Coga stressed that he had put down only one glove for now. He did not announce a definitive retirement, but neither did he commit to another fight. Surgery and recovery must come first.
The knee troubled him in the first round
Coga said his knee had already been unstable during preparation and gave way again in the opening round against Jungwirth. He continued despite considerable pain. Training had also been heavily restricted: Rather than wrestling or ground work, he had largely been limited to stationary pad work.
He expects surgery to take place in December. Afterwards, Coga anticipates roughly twelve months before he can resume training, followed by preparation for another bout. His future therefore depends not only on the outcome of the operation, but also on whether he wants to take on another long road back.
Another layoff after the hand injury
It would be Coga's second lengthy interruption in succession. During his October 2024 win over Antun Račić, he suffered an open fracture of his right hand. Four operations and a bone graft followed. The right opponent would also matter if Coga returns. He said he does not want to take just any fight; he needs a challenge that makes another demanding preparation worthwhile. Coga has not announced a definitive retirement. Whether he fights again remains an open question.
