Three German Wins Open the European Championships
Valerij Walter has reached the quarter-finals while Denis Bril and Mouxime Abdoulay opened with unanimous wins. Germany remains in medal contention after two days in Sofia.
Germany had to wait until the second day for its first victory at the Elite European Championships, then three arrived in succession. Denis Bril, Mouxime Abdoulay and Valerij Walter all won their opening bouts in Sofia. Walter has already reached the quarter-finals and now stands one victory away from a medal.
After the first two competition days, Germany's record stands at three wins and four defeats. The German Boxing Federation has entered four women and nine men. The tournament at the Asics Arena is the first Elite European Championship staged under European Boxing, with more than 400 boxers from over 40 nations taking part.
Walter is one win from a medal
Valerij Walter delivered Germany's most significant result so far. The 85-kilogram boxer beat Armenia's Rafayel Hovhannisyan by a 4-1 decision in the round of 16. His quarter-final will decide whether he reaches the medal stage: as usual in Olympic-style boxing, both losing semi-finalists receive bronze.
The result confirms Walter's ability to compete in a deep international field. It also matters to a German team whose head coach, Humberto Horta Dominguez, said before the tournament that two medals would represent a highly satisfactory outcome. Walter has taken the first concrete step towards that target.
Unanimous wins for Bril and Abdoulay
Denis Bril opened Germany's successful Friday with a clear 5-0 decision over Moldova's Vladislav Vascovskyi, advancing to the round of 16 at 60 kilograms. Mouxime Abdoulay followed later in the day, defeating another Moldovan, Davron Bozorov, by the same unanimous score in the 75-kilogram division.
Those victories changed the direction of Germany's start. Jule Woche and Randy Botikali had both been eliminated on Thursday, leaving the team under early pressure. Bril and Abdoulay levelled the record before Walter ended the day by securing a place in the last eight.
Narrow defeat for Siala as four Germans exit
Mohamed Siala came closest to joining the winners. His bout with experienced Irishman Dean Clancy ended in a 3-2 split decision against the German. Ramil Schäfer lost unanimously to Austria's Lucky Aimufua. On the opening day, Jule Woche had been beaten 5-0 by Anastasija Lukajić and Randy Botikali lost 4-1 to Vadzim Vauchok.
More German medal contenders enter the draw
The third competition day features Maxi Klötzer against Italy's Martina Vassallo, Ali El Sari against Turkey's Semih Gümüş and Helena Engels against Ukraine's Raisa Piskun. Leonie Müller, Kevin Lebowski and Nikita Putilov are due to begin on Sunday. Müller and Putilov, in particular, have already shown at major international tournaments that they can reach the decisive rounds.
The Elite European Championships continue through September 25. The preliminary rounds are available free on Eurovision Sport, while Germany's quarter-final bouts are also scheduled for coverage by Sportschau from Tuesday. The decisive stage is now approaching: one more win would guarantee Walter a medal, while Bril and Abdoulay still have additional rounds to navigate.
