Goltsov, Djantou Nana Meet Again

Denis Goltsov will have an opportunity to answer a five-year-old defeat under a new rule set at PFL Chicago. The former PFL heavyweight champion faces Maxwell Djantou Nana at Wintrust Arena on October 16. Promotion officials confirmed the matchup to Sherdog, and it now appears on both fighters' official PFL profiles. This will be their first MMA contest, but not their first meeting.

Djantou Nana defeated Goltsov in the 2021 Combat Sambo world championship final in Tashkent, claiming gold in the over-98-kilogram division. Goltsov, a world champion in 2016 and 2017, took silver. That result gives a regular PFL bout a history with more sporting substance than a manufactured feud: the less established name has already beaten the veteran on the terrain most closely associated with him.

Not a conventional rematch

The 2021 result does not automatically make Djantou Nana the favorite. Combat Sambo allows strikes, throws and submissions, but it is contested in jackets and uses a different scoring system and time structure. MMA adds the cage, longer rounds and a different competitive rhythm. Their old meeting shows that Djantou Nana can handle Goltsov's physicality and wrestling pedigree. It does not decide who is the better heavyweight under PFL rules.

Goltsov enters that question with far more MMA experience. The 36-year-old owns a 37-9 professional record. He won the 2024 PFL heavyweight championship by submitting Oleg Popov, and PFL lists him as the promotion's all-time leader in stoppage wins. His combination of Sambo, top control and finishing ability has kept him among the division's leading fighters for years.

Two finishes on the same night

Their immediate form provides another connection. Goltsov and Djantou Nana competed in separate preliminary bouts at PFL Charlotte on August 7. Goltsov stopped the previously unbeaten Hasan Mezhiev with a head kick and follow-up punches after just 52 seconds. Djantou Nana took longer but finished Eduardo Neves with a body punch in the third round.

For Goltsov, the result was a rapid response to his July 2025 loss to Corey Anderson. Djantou Nana collected his second win of 2026 and improved to 9-2. Seven of his nine victories have come by knockout or technical knockout. The 35-year-old is therefore more than an interesting Sambo connection: his power and ability to maintain his threat into later rounds had moved him to No. 6 in the PFL rankings used for the Charlotte event. Goltsov entered that card at No. 3.

Djantou Nana's hardest transition

Djantou Nana's main task is not to recreate the 2021 result. He must stop Goltsov from turning his greater MMA experience into long stretches of control inside the cage. At range, the Cameroonian carries enough power to hurt Goltsov with single shots. If he is pinned beneath the former champion or repeatedly gives up position along the fence, an explosive matchup can quickly become a three-round endurance test.

Goltsov also knows that Djantou Nana cannot be treated as an inexperienced MMA fighter or a one-dimensional striker. The Combat Sambo world champion understands throws, transitions and physical exchanges at an international level. Goltsov's advantage is therefore less about owning one isolated phase than about his experience connecting those phases under MMA conditions.

PFL Chicago is headlined by Liz Carmouche and Jena Bishop, who meet for the inaugural PFL women's flyweight world championship. Goltsov vs Djantou Nana has not been announced as an official title eliminator. A win between the promotion's then-No. 3 and No. 6 heavyweights should still move the winner toward the front of the division. The appeal goes beyond rankings: five years later, the same men are moving from the Sambo mat to the cage. Only there will the current MMA value of Djantou Nana's first victory become clear.
